Knitting & Zocalo in the News
April 13th, 2008
The Daily Review recently featured a new knitting class run by local parent, Kellie McKeown. They are help Thursday afternoons. Check out the article here. And here's a snippet of the beginning...
Kellie McKeown picks up a needle and loops a string of yarn around it. "In through the front door, out the back and through the window," she says, demonstrating how to cast yarn onto the needle. McKeown teaches a weekly youth knitting class held Thursday afternoons at Zocalo Coffeehouse. Classes began last week with five students, two of whom are McKeown's daughters.

How to Maximize your Buzz?
Feb 13th, 2008
This article on ScienceBlogs.com by Chris Chatham, a 2nd year Grad student Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Colorado, Boulder is a respectful, scientific take on all that caffeinne we're consuming. We all know it's there, we all know it affects us, but there are so many myths, abuses, and general lack of knowledge on the details.
Here's an extract:
Caffeine crosses the blood-brain barrier quickly although it can take up to 45 minutes for full ingestion through the gastro-intestinal tract. Under normal conditions, this remains stable for around 1 hour before gradually clearing in the following 3-4 hours.

Artist Reception this Friday, 7-9pm
January 29th, 2008
A new artist is going up this week at Zocalo and there's an artist's reception for her this Friday!
Ashley Davenport describes her work as "portraits, figures, landscape abstractions, collage, interior worlds" and I think she's got it dead on. Beautiful pieces of a wide variety of styles and moods make up this artist's oevre.

Back Online!
August 9th, 2007
Due to technical difficulties, I’ve been unable to update the site, but we’re back online now and I’ll be updating the site more overall.
In fact, check out our new Coffee News section on the left sidebar to get the latest news and tidbits on coffee. It’s just a start, but at least it’s a start!

Folks, here's your chance to tell the world what you like about Zocalo! We're having a booth and we're putting a call out to our loyalest of loyal customers!
We'll be serving brewed coffee to the ever-faithful caffeine-needy and doling out a bit of community in our recreated coffeehouse setting, under the Zocalo flag.
Contact me now to volunteer to hold court at our booth with a few other regulars on June 9th!

I'm happy to say that Lango, Spanish language immersion classes to kids between the ages of 1 and 8, will be holding classes at Zocalo Coffeehouse on Tuesdays at 10am in the back room. In fact, the teacher will be none other than local mom, Daniela Leamer!
See our calendar in the sidebar to the right for other events and scheduled classes in the back room.
4/16/07 - We're Hiring!
Due to a few recent and unexpected departures from Zocalo's barista staff, I'm looking high and low for new people to work.
If you know anyone looking for a part time job (20-35 hours a week) who can work a variety of weekday and weekend shifts, please let me know (I'm afraid this eliminates high schoolers). We have applications they can fill out at Zocalo.
4/16/07 - 4H Photographers Reception
We've got a photography show up of the local 4H photography club. These kids range in age from young teen to nearly adult and will be here for a reception this Friday from 6:30-8pm.
All photographs are for sale at a reasonable price and Zocalo's cut goes to the 4H program itself, so indulge yourself, get a photo!
3/26/07 - Zocalo in Oakland Mag
Oakland Magazine did a piece on Zocalo as part of an article on kid's cafes, Java and Jungle Gyms. The photo is of my godson Jarred (onthe right) and his best friend Timmy! The other cafes covered, PriPri Cafe, Tumble & Tea, and the Play Cafe, all focus primarily on kids, unlike Zocalo. I was glad noted Zocalo's community and political focus.
3/14/07 - Ellen Corbett event
Ellen Corbett will be holding her annual Irish Coffee gathering at Zocalo this year, Friday, March 16th at 7pm. Donations are welcome as always, but not required. Don't miss your chance to speak to your State Senator one on one, and to meet this great woman in person.

2/22/07 - Films Series Starting this Thursday, 7pm
SLCAN, The San Leandro Community Action Network, is holding a film series at Zocalo Coffeehouse starting this Thursday, March 1st. This is a free event, though, due to the subject nature of the films and discussion, not child appropriate.
The first films will be The Suburban Wall & The Invisible Wall , two nationally-aired TV documentaries on housing discrimination in San Leandro in the 1960s and 1970s. Following the film will be a facilitated discussion about San Leandro then and now and Zocalo coffee will be available.

1/5/07 - Help Harrison
Harrison is the two year old of one of our favorite regulars and is fighting Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). He needs a bone marrow transplant to survive and has spent most of this year fighting cancer, which went into remission in August. Unfortunately he relapshelped just before Thanksgiving.
How can you help? Harrison needs a bone marrow transplant and a donor is needed. You can see upcoming drives they are organizing right here.
1/2/07 - Joe Holmes Showing at Zocalo
Joe Holmes, my oldest brother who lives in Brooklyn, has become quite a hit in the art world and was just selected by the Jen Bekman Gallery in Manhattan as one of their hot new artists. He'll be holding a show at their gallery soon.
In the meantime, it's my pleasure to host his ANMH series at Zocalo Coffeehouse. This is the first all seven editioned prints in the series will be shown together. While I'd love to say it's their first West-coast showing, Joe points out hes now shown his work in Seattle, Portland, San Diego, and Carmel!
12/17/06 - Merry Christmas!
My family has always celebrated Christmas in the non-denominational US cultural sense of the holiday... Gifts, family, and decorations. With that in mind, I hope you'll enjoy the 14' tree we've put up at Zocalo. We've got lights on, but no decorations on it yet. They'll come soon.
12/11/06 - New Being!

Speaking of new stuff at Zocalo. My wife Mitch and I are pleased to announce the birth of our second child! You can check out photos of the new arrival here...
Tim, Mitch, Calvin, and Malcolm11/30/06 - Stop Homework Now!
Evidence shows piles of homework is counter-productive to learning and to family life. It's starting in kindergarden and they're getting 50% more than when you were a kid.
This book not only makes the case clearly, but it explains how to get your schools to reduce the burden. I think this is an important part of building community. Community can't exist where there is no free time to associate with others.
11/29/06 - Great Local Resource - marga.org
There are a lot of restaurants in and around San Leandro, but who can tell which ones are good and which ones suck? Well, here's one woman's opinions. Check out Marga Lacabe's reviews of the local eatteries and hangouts!
11/27/06 - Girls Inc. Poetry Cafe!

It's that time of year... Fall! Time for new beans and family holidays. This year we've got a number of new beans and blends for your Thanksgiving enjoyment...
 |
Jamaica Blue Mountain
We skipped last year's mediocre crop, but this year's is in and it's a good one! Get it while it lasts, Peet's sold out of theirs at $80/lb. We offer it for only $45/lb! If you want to give something special, this is the bean. |
 |
2006 Holiday Blend
Fair Trade, Organically Grown, and delicious. Mitch has outdone herself, the feedback from you all has been wonderful. This is a smooth, subtle yet rich coffee perfect for company, family, and a great breakfast blend. |
 |
Java
Do the Java Jive! We've had Mocca-Java as a blend for a while, now you can get the two individual beans, Java and Mocca. Java is a dark roast with an earthy rich full body. It's one of Mitch's new favorites! |
 |
Yemen Mocca Sanani
An excellent, medium roast dessert coffee, like a good cabernet. It's very complex with hints of floral and citrus. |
11/21/06 - Open Thanksgiving Day, 8-Noon
That's right, come on down for your caffeiene and community fix on Thanksgiving day and give the relatives the slip. Thanks to my wonderful staff who are giving up their Thanksgiving mornings, we'll be open 8am to Noon, so don't miss out!

Diana Souza, who is running for City Council, is holding an event Thursday at Zocalo. This is an opportunity to raise issues with and ask questions of Diana. Festivities start at 7pm and coffee is compliments of Zocalo as usual.
9/12/06 - Just Back from the Pacific Northwest
Just back from a two week road trip to Victoria BC with the wife and kid+! We packed up the Prius and putted out of town destined for the Northwest and a wedding in Victoria at The Empress Hotel.
It was a really great trip and Calvin was a doll, handling the odd sleeping arrangements and times like a champ.
8/24/06 - Signing photos
Photos of the book signing are up. Please visit them at your leisure here...
8/21/06 - Huge Book Signing
I'm happy to say the book signing for Brian Copeland's new book, Not a Genuine Black Man, was great! We had press, big crowds, both the mayoral candidates and World of Books, who sold copies onsite, ran out of their 75 copies!
8/16/06 - Zocalo in the Daily Review
Not a Genuine Black Man book signing, Thursday
We were in the Daily Review today in a story about Brian Copeland's book signing for Not a Genuine Black Man, available for sale at the event courtesy of San Leandro's own World of Books.
Margarita Lacabe, spouse of School Board candidate Mike Katz, is coordinator of the event and has been bringing some of our local drama to light... Read the article here!
A few choice quotes:
"This is a history nobody wants to consider, but it is a message of how diverse we have become. And, if anything, we need to highlight it." - M. Lacabe
"They claim that San Leandro was never racist ... There's still the ignorant few who still don't get it..." - Brian Copeland
8/4/06 - Zocalo makes the Times (the SL Times)
Zocalo Coffeehouse was recently honored as Small Business of the Year by Distict 10 Senator Liz Figueroa and the San Leandro Times covered it here.
8/3/06 - Katz for School Board Kick-Off
Tonight, don't mi School Board candidate Mike Katz is having his kick off at Zocalo. Starting at 7pm you can talk to the man himself to see where he stands on issues you care about and don't even know it. Needless to say, I'm a supporter. (p.s. while donations are always welcome in cases of elections, a donation isn't needed to attend. That's what they call 'em donations.
7/22/06 - Ellen Corbett for Senate Fundraiser
Coming up on the 27th of July, just next Thursday, is a final fundraiser for Ellen Corbett who is running for State Senate for our district.
Come meet Ellen, express your concerns and voice your opinions directly to the elected official yourself! There's no better person to listen than Ellen and you can't complain if you don't participate!
7/17/06 - It's Hot Out There, but Zocalo has AC!
Normally I wouldn't make an entry here just to comment on the weather, but it's relevant to Zocalo as it happens...
Zocalo is Air Conditioned
Air conditioning was partly responsible for the declining sense of community as people no longer sit on their porch in hot weather. Fortunately it serves the opposite purpose at Zocalo, bringing together the varied strata of society for a little relief from the oppressive world out there... so to speak.
6/13/06 - Coffee Reduces Risk of Cirrhosis
"Coffee may counteract alcohol's poisonous effects on the liver and help prevent cirrhosis," researchers say in a new study. Just one more piece of evidence that coffee is good for you!
6/8/06 - Mayor's Race is a Run-Off
The recent Mayoral Candidate Forum at Zocalo was a big success with over 80 attendees and all of the candidates in attendance. Since both the Mayoral race as well as one councilmember race are in a runoff, look for more Candidate Forums in the future!

Here's Mike Katz-Lacabe, our moderator asking questions of the candidates. In left to right order: OB Badger, Lou Filipovich, Tony Santos, and Marcene Nardine, before Filipovich decided to exit the stage.
6/6/06 - Now Open Sundays from 7am - 6pm
In keeping with our goal of being open all the time, we're extended our hours again!
Starting Sunday, June 18th, we'll be open until 6pm seven days of the week, 365 days a year. With our new Sunday hours Zocalo will be opening an hour earlier at 7am and closing two hours later at 6pm!
5/27/06 - Open 8–2 Memorial Day, May 29th
In keeping with our goals to be there when you need us most, we'll be open from 8am to 2pm on Memorial Day this year.
We're open 365 days a year, so this should come as no surprise to you, of course.
5/25/06 - Fresh Squeezed Lemonade is Back
It's getting in the 70s and 80s again and that means it's time for fresh squeezed lemonade.
5/24/06 - Mayoral Candidate Forum, June 1st, 7pm
I'm pleased to announce a few exciting events coming up. Well, I'm excited by them, I can't speak for you of course.

This is the product of a group of which I'm a founding member, the San Leandro Community Action Network, a newly formed grassroots group working to improve San Leandro's quality of life.
I think the candidates forum will be really interesting as we hope to get in-depth on some good subjects. We've asked each of the Mayoral candidates to respond to a set of questions and we'll be delving into some of those responses live on stage! Those questions and the responses of each candidate, both for mayor and for councilmember, will be posted on our website at <www.slcan.org>
3/14/06 - Art Glass Event Sat, 29th, 7pm
Local glass artist, Chris Roscoe, will be holding an event at Zocalo to celebrate the opening of his online store, roscoeartglass.com.
Food and drink are offered and you can check out his online store in person, along with examples of his work.
3/14/06 - Artists Reception Photos
Our current artist, Godfrey DiGiorgi, had his artists reception this past Sunday evening and he has been kind enough to post photos!
Not only that, but the local paper of the Isle of Man, which is the subject of the photos in his show, did an article on the show!
3/8/06 - Ellen Corbett Fundraiser, Friday, 6pm
Beloved former San Leandro Mayor and local, Ellen Corbett, is running for State Senate for our district. I'm holding an Irish Coffee event at Zocalo Coffeehouse this Friday, March 10th, from 6-8pm to help and I'd like to encourage you to help as well.
We'll have roast beef sandwiches by Samm of Blue Dish Cafe, as well as some tasty treats by Zocalo regular Julie Durkee of Tonino Baking.
Come by and learn more about Ellen! There's a minimum donation of only $25 all the way up to the maximum $3300. Any amount would be acceptable I'm sure. If we expect candidates to raise their money from individuals, not companies, we individuals need to start donating!
For more information on Ellen Corbett and her campaign, visit her website. There's not much there at the moment, but will be properly up and running in about two weeks.

What is Zocalo Coffeehouse About?
|
Coffeehouses Through Time
Coffeehouses
have a long tradition of being gathering places. They’ve been
the home to many a revolutionary, with caffeinated spirits rallying
themselves and their compatriots to a cause. In fact, throughout
history coffeehouses have been banned by oppressive regimes for
their fostering of free thought and discussion.
We
hope to inspire friendships, conversations, and even, perhaps, some
learning; a place where the customers, my neighbors, can talk freely,
within walking distance of their homes.
We Roast Our Own
By roasting
our own coffee we not only get to pass along lower prices, but we
can control the quality of the product we serve. We offer a wide
range of both coffee and tea, as well as whole-bean sales
Community
Focus
In
addition to a warm and inviting atmosphere we offer a number of
other amenities such as a family-friendly kids play area and a baby
changing station in the restroom, free wireless internet access,
a game table, your favorite magazines available for reading, and
of course our full line of coffee, teas, specialty teas, elixirs,
other drinks, and pastries.
